Auto Repair Manuals: Are They Useful?
Each new vehicle comes with its own manual, like any other new gadget or appliance. It does not have instructions on how to drive your car because this is something that you already should have learned while you were in driving school. What it provides instead are guides on how you can use your car’s various features and components such as defroster, air conditioning, heater, and many others. Depending on your car’s manufacturer, it may also include reminders and tips on basic car maintenance and responsible car ownership.
A car owner’s manual is, however, not the same as a car repair guide or manual. The former has basic information on how to operate a car’s different systems and components. The second one provides information on auto repair. A car repair guide may also include reminders and tips on how to use and maintain your car, but if focuses on providing comprehensive instructions in system repairs and replacement of car parts. Car repair manuals are useful when you need to fix small issues on your own or if you want to save money on car repair shop bills.
Because car repair manuals can cover a potentially immense number of topics, it would quite hard to include every single topic in just one manual. Chances are, thousands of pages of repair instructions would probably need to be printed or published if we have to include every single kind of repair that one can do to a car in one lone manual. This is why auto repair manuals usually come in different kinds, both available in print or online.
When it comes to the maintenance and basic repair of the most commonly replaced components like turn signals, fuses, and windshield wiper inserts, you should use generic car repair manuals. Because they are generic, they can be referred to when you are troubleshooting cars of different makes and models.
Vehicle specific repair manuals also exist like generic car repair guides. Their content is practically the same as the generic repair manuals. However, they are especially made for specific car makes and models. They are aptly named as vehicle-specific because they are tailored to certain kinds of cars and are meant to be used for more complicated kinds of repairs.
If you want to do your car’s troubleshooting and repairs yourself, make sure that you are consulting the right kind of auto repair manual. Use a generic repair manual for basic repairs and a vehicle-specific repair manual if the problem is limited to your car. With the right auto repair manual in your hands, it should be quite easy for you to learn and perform repairs on your car.
